Chlorine has been used for water and wastewater disinfection for over 100 years. Primarily due to safety concerns of transporting/storing/handling this hazardous gas, many utilities have switched to a sodium hypochlorite solution to mitigate some of the safety risks. But sodium hypochlorite delivered at a 12.5-15% solution is also a hazardous chemical and is significantly more expensive than the gas alternative. Further, supply chain disruptions have threatened consistency of deliveries of both chemicals and have dramatically impacted the price of both over the past 5 years. Onsite generation of sodium hypochlorite (OSHG) through novel, safe, and easy-to-install/use technologies has become a very popular alternative disinfection strategy. This discussion will explore the various disinfection alternatives, pros and cons for each, and highlight the safety, operational efficiency, and financial benefits of implementing OSHG, rapidly becoming the preferred disinfection method in water and wastewater treatment processes throughout the country.
