Webinar - Connected Controls, Smarter Savings: LLLC and Smart Pumps in High-Performance Projects

Monday, July 28, 2025 (3:00 PM - 4:00 PM) (EDT)

Description

This session will explore how smart technologies, both in pumps and lighting, can significantly enhance building energy performance, operational control, and long-term savings. We will discuss the general benefits of smart pumps, including increased energy efficiency, improved hydronic system performance, and enhanced control capabilities. Attendees will gain insight into how these advanced solutions can optimize operations and reduce energy consumption across a variety of system types. Then we will introduce Luminaire Level Lighting Controls (LLLC), an advanced lighting solution with integrated sensors directly into each fixture. LLLC enables real-time data collection, zone control, daylight harvesting, occupancy response, and advanced scheduling. These capabilities not only deliver energy savings but also support maintenance planning, space utilization, and future-ready building management. This presentation offers a comprehensive overview of how smart pumps and LLLC technologies function individually and together to unlock smarter, scalable solutions for energy efficiency and building performance in retrofit and new construction projects.

Presenters:

Chris Wolgamott, Sr. Product Manager Emerging Technology, Northwest Energy Efficiency Alliance, and Rick Olson-Huddle, Sr. Engineering Manager, Resource Innovations, on behalf of NEEA

Learning Objectives:

  1. Differentiate smart pumps from traditional pumps and explain how smart technology—including variable speed capabilities—can reduce energy use and operating costs, even in constant-load systems.
  2. Identify the non-energy benefits of smart pumps, such as simplified installation, enhanced control functionality, and improved data visibility for system performance.
  3. Distinguish Luminaire Level Lighting Controls (LLLC) from traditional lighting systems and explain how integrated sensors and wireless controls contribute to energy savings, occupant-responsive lighting, and system flexibility.
  4. Identify the non-energy benefits of LLLC, including easier commissioning, enhanced space utilization insights, and future-ready integration with building automation systems.
